Wegmans Food Markets Funds New High Tunnel at the Food Shuttle Farm

Wegmans Food Market has invested a milestone gift of $15,000 to Inter-Faith Food Shuttle in honor of their late 2020 store grand opening in West Cary. This donation reflects Wegmans’ mission of helping communities live healthier, better lives through food. Wegmans' generosity is expanding the Food Shuttle’s distribution of fresh produce, helping critically vulnerable populations of children, families, and seniors.

These funds will be used to build a high tunnel structure at the Food Shuttle Farm, directly increasing crop rotation and production. The 14-acre farm, located off Tryon Road in Raleigh, produced 48,166 pounds of produce last year; however, it has the capacity to produce over 200,000 pounds of fresh, diversified produce long term. The addition of this high tunnel will allow the farm to produce a higher quality product in a shorter time, providing more produce to programs like Mobile Markets, Grocery Bags for Seniors, and distribution to our community partners.

Wegmans continues to make hunger relief a giving priority, supporting food banks, running seasonal checkout campaigns, and hosting annual fundraising events. Their approach of sharing food and enriching neighborhoods in every way they can aligns with the Food Shuttle’s mission to Feed, Teach, and Grow in the community. The high tunnel will be built in Spring 2021 and ready to support the farm’s production as we move into the spring and fall planting seasons.
