Inter-Faith Food Shuttle Tackles Child Hunger With Summer Meals Program

School is finally out and summer has officially begun, which is annually an exciting time for a child. Unfortunately, not all children can share in this excitement because one in five children are at risk of hunger--a statistic that is increasing due to the coronavirus pandemic. During the school year, children have access to free- and reduced-priced breakfasts and lunches, but during the summer months when schools are closed, access to these meals vanish. And yet, hunger and the need for healthy food never disappears.

One of Inter-Faith Food Shuttle’s innovative approaches to summer hunger is with the Summer Meals program. This program serves children ages 18 and under, that may struggle to access adequate nutrition during the summer, with free summer meals. As a sponsor of this national program, Inter-Faith Food Shuttle works with various organizations, neighborhoods, and church groups to provide free nutritious summer meals throughout the city of Raleigh.

One out of three low-income families report not having enough money for food during the summer months, which can put a lot of stress on families. Without access to nutritious meals, children are more susceptible to weight gain which can lead to chronic illness later in life. This critical program protects against cognitive decline and an array of other health and development challenges.
