Conventional thought has always been, "if you're hungry, any food is better than no food."
We are simply not willing to settle for that.
From our earliest days of recovering food, we saw how people living in poverty depended on fast or processed foods. We started to see the connection between hunger and obesity - how hungry people often didn't look hungry. By emphasizing healthy low-cost ingredients, including fresh produce, our programs empower participants to meet their own food needs and get the most nutrition out of their limited budgets.
Share Our Strength's Cooking Matters
Inter-Faith Food Shuttle is the largest implementation partner in North Carolina for Share Our Strength's nutrition education program, Cooking Matters. As part of the No Kid Hungry campaign to end childhood hunger in America, the Cooking Matters and Cooking Matters at the Store curriculum teaches participants to shop smarter, use nutrition information to make healthier choices, and cook delicious affordable meals.
How it Works:
Professional culinary and nutrition educators volunteer their time and expertise to lead hands-on 6-week courses tailored to adults, families, kids and teens.
Courses are offered in English and Spanish.
Topics include USDA MyPlate guidelines, healthy eating habits, food budgeting, and family-friendly menu planning.
Each adult recipient receives a take home bag of groceries.
Cooking Matters at the Store
Cooking Matters at the Store is a guided grocery store tour that helps low-income families make healthy and affordable choices at the supermarket. During the tour, participants practice key food shopping skills such as:
Buying fruits and vegetables on a budget
Comparing unit prices
Reading food labels
Identifying whole grain foods
Participants complete a $10 challenge, allowing them to practice skills learned during the tour and take home a meals' worth of healthy groceries!
Food Matters Program
As the Food Shuttle increases access to fresh and local produce in low-income neighborhoods—at people's point of need—our Community Health Educators ensure that people have the knowledge and skill to utilize it.
How it Works
Mobile Market participants are introduced to less common veggies and they learn to select, prepare, and store fresh produce through nutrition activities, cooking demonstrations, and monthly health challenges

How to Get Involved
Volunteers are needed for nutrition and culinary instructors, classroom assistants, and grocery store tour facilitators. Backgrounds in culinary arts, nutrition, or education are highly encouraged, but not required for all positions. Translators and Spanish-speaking volunteers needed for ALL positions.
