Carolina Hurricanes Foundation Puts Childhood Hunger on Ice

It’s been a good year for the Carolina Hurricanes.  And being the community-minded sort, the folks behind the team have shared their good fortune far and wide.  Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, and specifically Backpack Buddies, has been the recipient of the generosity and goodwill of the Carolina Hurricanes Foundation, putting childhood hunger on ice in the Triangle area.

The Carolina Hurricanes Foundation’s mission is to support children’s health and education initiatives. Child food insecurity falls into both of those categories.  The Backpack Buddies program provides children from food-insecure households with healthy weekend meals during the school year. It’s a perfect partnership of programs—this coming together of initiatives that fight childhood hunger.

Recently, volunteers from the Carolina Hurricanes Foundation spent some time at the Child Food Hub in Durham where they packed 483 backpacks, which will provide 2,898 meals and 966 snacks for children.  This on top of a much-appreciated $10,000 Foundation grant for Child Hunger Programs that was awarded to Food Shuttle.  Talk about sharing the wealth!

“For the Canes staff, to hear the metrics after the Backpack Buddies packing has taken place is truly impactful. Knowing that in an hour, we were able to pack food that would provide almost 2,898 meals and 966 snacks for children is very humbling,” said Lindsay Robertson, Assistant Director, Carolina Hurricanes Foundation.
