Children's BackPack Buddies[?]

Driver[?]

Volunteers in this program drive our small box trucks, retrieving food from donor sites and distributing it to designated recipient agencies. Our vehicles are small, automatic transmission, box trucks. No special license is required, just a clean, valid, NC driver’s license. Volunteer times in this program run from 8am to 4pm, Monday through Friday and 8am to 2pm on Saturdays.

Driver Assistant[?]

Volunteers ride along with a volunteer or staff driver to retrieve donated food and deliver it to designated recipient agencies. Volunteer times in this program run from 8am to 4pm, Monday through Friday and 8am to 2pm on Saturdays.

Field Gleaning[?]

Harvest the excess crops of area farmers from the fields. We work in the mornings for 2 to 3 hours in locations up to an hour away from IFFS. You may ride separately or in an IFFS truck. Volunteer as an individual or group.

Grocery Bags for Seniors (Groups only) [?]

GROUPS ONLY; 15 people or less Groups in this program make and deliver grocery bags to low-income seniors or families. We set the group up in a production line giving them everything they need --- produce, snacks and bags. Then we provide them with maps and directions, so that, using their own vehicles, they can deliver those bags directly to the people who’ll be using them. The entire group goes to one location, and even delivers door-to-door. This usually takes about 2 hours --- from start to finish. This activity is available Tuesday through Thursday at 10:30am or 1:30pm and on some Saturdays at varying times.

IFFS Teaching Farm[?]

The Inter-Faith Food Shuttle Teaching Farm (4505 Tryon Rd, Raleigh) is available for pre-scheduled volunteer events Tuesdays thru Fridays from 8am-12pm Saturdays 8am-2pm. Groups or individuals may email us at farmsandgardens@foodshuttle.org to schedule volunteer times at either farm. Volunteers will learn sustainable farm and gardening techniques, including organic soil fertility and weed control, seasonal and year-round planting strategies, pasture raised poultry and vermi-composting and more, all while making important contributions to local food security. In addition, Food Shuttle Teaching Farm also has internship opportunities that provide an in-depth experience with many of our farming techniques in return for an on-going time commitment of 5 hours a week or more.

Nutrition Education - Cooking Matters[?]

Cooking Matters is a cooking-based nutrition education course designed to teach low-income kids, teens, and adults to prepare healthy, tasty meals on a limited budget. Culinary and nutrition professionals volunteer their time and expertise to lead hands-on courses at community agencies throughout the Triangle. Courses meet once a week for six consecutive weeks and use the nationally developed Cooking Matters curricula.

Nutrition Education -Food Matters[?]

Volunteers lead interactive and fun nutrition education experiences that help participants learn to select, purchase, and prepare healthy foods. These events are intended for low-income groups and vary in length and content. Food Matters one-time events include: nutrition/culinary/gardening demos; Shopping Matters™ grocery store tours; nutrition education tabling events; and healthy recipe/cooking demonstrations at IFFS Mobile Markets.

One-Time Special Events[?]

From time to time IFFS is invited to various events where we need volunteers to staff a table and hand out our literature. Check this box to receive e-mail notifications of volunteer needs for such special events.

Plant A Row for the Hungry Member[?]

Grow an extra row in your garden to donate at a designated drop-off site.

Warehouse[?]

We also use volunteers for this program in the warehouse --- washing pans, sweeping, mopping, sorting food, loading/unloading trucks and running trash. Volunteer times in this program run from 9am to 4pm, Monday through Friday and 9am to 2pm on Saturdays
