The Inter-Faith Food Shuttle Farm Program was developed in 2009 and has been growing ever since, providing instruction, training, and fresh local produce for those in need.
WHERE:
- Wake County Farm: six acres off Tryon Rd. in Raleigh
- Orange County Farm: six acres on Jones Ferry Rd. near Carrboro
WHY
- Produce fresh, local, organic, and nutritious food
- Provide seedlings in our greenhouse for our community gardens and Cooking Matters classes
- Host our Young Farmer Training Program
- Generate compost through wind rows, chicken manure, and worms
- Provide workshops, training, and education on sustainable agriculture farming practices
- Serve as a model for the integration of non-profits with the local food system
HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED
Our hours change according to farm needs and the seasons. We regularly have Saturday work hours and welcome you, your family, and neighbors! 2010 IMPACT:
- Started our new Young Farmer Training Program that teaches intensive market farming to at-risk youth, providing them with tools and skills to develop their own gardens, create new sources of local produce for food deserts, and/or make a profitable living in the local food industry
- Increased production to 1.75 acres
- Harvested over 18,000 pounds
- Engaged over 1900 volunteers who committed over 4,600 hours of service
- Produced more than 100 flats of transplants
- Produced over 5 tons of compost
- Started free range chicken, bush goat and vermi-composting operations to demonstrate the value and economic potential of integrated farming.
