Community Gardens

IFFS Community Gardens help build community health, wealth, and security by bringing our community together to EAT, GROW, COOK, SHARE, and MOVE.

The Inter-Faith Food Shuttle partners with communities to grow Community Gardens and promote healthy lifestyles. Through innovative initiatives and partnerships, we provide community members with education and tools necessary to improve community health and nutrition.  Community members are empowered to take back control of their food choices and lead healthier lives through increased access to fresh produce, nutrition and culinary education, and opportunities for leadership development, community building, and physical activity.

COMMUNITY GARDEN SITES INCLUDE:

Community Garden Work Hours & Activities

Our hours change according to community needs and the seasons. To receive the most up to date information on garden work and activities, please fill out the online volunteer form here: http://foodshuttle.org/volunteer.

Please confirm your attendance for garden work at least one day prior to the work day. Email Amanda (amanda@foodshuttle.org) to help in Wake County Gardens or call Elizabeth at 919.949.7258 to help in Durham.

Join us in the fight to end hunger by growing healthy, wholesome food for those in need!

Winter Garden Hours: please contact us directly for volunteer opportunities in the gardens November through February.

HANDS ON HEALTH

Food Shuttle's Hands on Health program is a holistic model supporting healthy eating and living in our communities.  The key components of this program are empowerment & education, shared leadership, collaborative decision making, and participatory planning & implementation. Hands on Health activities are largely shaped by community members based on what they view as key components to improving health in their neighborhoods.

Primary project elements and activities in each neighborhood include:

  • Community garden, gardening workshops, community “garden days”
  • Cooking Matters classes (nutrition, healthy cooking, food resource management)
  • Healthy food distribution
  • Physical activity
  • Tutoring & mentoring programs
  • Youth counseling and medical services
  • Community building activities (community dinners, educational sessions, tasting events)
  • Development of Community Advisory Board or leadership team
  • Train the Trainer workshops
  • Community mapping
  • Evaluation
