The Hidden Challenge of Hunger

We believe that hunger is unacceptable in our community. Yet every day right here in the Triangle, senior citizens have to decide between purchasing needed medications or buying food; parents must choose between paying rent or feeding their children; and thousands of homeless men, women, and children have insufficient resources of their own to obtain food. Not one or two, not ten or twenty, not a hundred or a thousand, but tens of thousands of our neighbors are in need.

Hunger in the the United States and in the Triangle

United States
Up to one-fifth of America's food goes to waste each year, with an estimated 130 pounds of food per person ending up in landfills. The annual value of this lost food is estimated at around $31billion. But the real story is that roughly 49 million people could have been fed by those lost resources.(USDA DAN GLICKMAN SECRETARY OF AGRICULTURE)

Wake County
Over 29,000 school-aged children come from food insecure homes, based on USDA guidelines. that means that 1 in 5 children may not have had a breakfast before they come to school, or may not get dinner when they get home.
