Donating Usable Food
Volunteering isn't the only way you can help. There are countless other ways to change peoples's lives by helping the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle. A major way is through Food Donation.
1. Saves Money
An average 8 cubic yard dumpster cost your business $129 per load.
Average dumping fee costs your business $22 per ton.
2. Generates Tax Credits
The Good Samaritan Tax Act and other legislation provides tax credit or tax deductions for donations. Please consult your CPA or tax attorney for information specific to your operation.
3. Good Corporate Citizenship
Recycling is rated as one of the top ten concerns of the general public. Focus groups report that they prefer to do business with companies who make a commitment to recycling on ALL levels.
4. Generates Good Publicity
Thousands of people from many churches and civic groups volunteer each year with the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle. They patronize Food Shuttle donors. Newsletters, truck logos, and other free publicity also heighten awareness of our good donors.
Donation Process
Here are a few easy steps to follow if you wish to join our 300 active food donors:
• Glance over our guidelines for foods we can and cannot accept here on this web site.
• Decide if this will be a one-time or an ongoing donation commitment.
• Ascertain if the food has been maintained in a safe and sanitary manner prior to donation.
• Contact Don Eli at 919-250-0043, with information on where the donation is to be picked up, any time constraints on the pick-up, contact name and phone number, type and amount of food to be donated, and types of containers needed for transport.
• We will schedule a pick-up as soon as possible based on our route schedule.
Food We Need
The Inter-Faith Food Shuttle specializes in rescuing perishable foods. Some of the things we gratefully accept are:
• Surplus prepared food from certified commercial kitchens
• Fresh or frozen meats
• Milk, eggs, cheeses
• Fresh bulk fruits and vegetables
• Foods still in their original packaging
If you are not sure if we can take the product you want to donate, give us a call 919-250-0043.
Unusable Food
Because of the nature of the populations that ultimately receive our food, certain types of foods are either inappropriate for, or unusable by our recipient agencies. While we applaud the desire to help others every time we encounter it, there are some donations we must regretfully decline. Some of them are:
• Home-prepared foods from non-certified, non-commercial kitchens.
• Food prepared using alcohol products as ingredients.
• Game meats, except when provided through the organization NC Hunters for the Hungry.
• Bagels and crusty, unsliced breads.
• Partially-consumed or opened containers of food.
• Food that has been out on a self-serve buffet line.
